Today we spent most of the day working on boat issues.  We cleaned the boat and since we had all the carpeting and chairs removed from the engine hatch, Mike decided to do an engine check.  Of course he found a problem.  We were low on antifreeze and upon further inspection discovered where the problem was.  Mike dug into his spare parts and pulled out a new water pump for the port engine.  He changed out both serpentine belts, one for each engine, while he was at it.  After that was finished we received the UPS Package we were hoping to get in today, so tomorrow will be another work day as Mike changes out the toilet Quiet Flush Pump Assembly.

We are having a late dinner tonight, at the historic Patties 1880's Settlement restaurant.  We will let you know all about it, tomorrow.

We drank our coffee and headed away from our Lock 52 anchorage at about 8am.  It was another nice  quiet day.  At about 9:45am we left the Ohio River and entered the Cumberland River.  This river is very scenic and quiet.  Not much tow traffic, in fact we only passed one tow during this run.  It was so quiet Captain Mike emptied the 75 gallon gasoline bladder into the gas tank and cleaned up the boat.

Cumberland river has a lot of gravel industry.   It must be busy on week days.

Quiet Cumberland

At about 2:45pm we got to the Barkley Lock.  It goes up 57 feet.  It was very new and amazingly fast.
Waiting for the door to open at Barkley Lock

Just on the other side of Barkley Lock is our destination, Lake Barkley and Green Turtle Marina.  We have reservations for a week at Green Turtle.  It is a full service resort and marina.

Joell immediately made reservations for both Mike and Joell to get hair cuts at the spa.  We went that evening to the Commonwealth Yacht Club at the Green Turtle Bay Marina and had drinks and dinner.  We brought our own booze and the yacht club bartender then fixed and served the drinks for you.  He then charged $2.50 a glass or $5.00 for corking fee.  Very odd.  Green Turtle Bay happens to be in a dry county.

Monday
Labor Day

We went for provisions, to Walmart.  The marina has a loaner car.  One couple for 2 hours or two couples for 4 hours.  Of course, we went with John and Joanna for the 4 hours.

Today we left our anchorage at about 7:45am.  It was a gorgeous morning.  Slight breeze, sun and no clouds.  Mike looked at our next course, while Joell drove.  Not much barge (tow) traffic.  Must be due to Labor Day weekend.  About 9:30am we arrived at Lock and Dam 52.  The dam master told us the wait would be 2 hours.  We were told to anchor out until he called us through.  Mike tied a few line ends, to pass the time, while the admiral wrote a few lines for the blog.  We were still running with our boat buddies John and Joanna.

After about 2 hours, we called the lock master again.  He stated there were about 7 tows waiting and he would try to get us through after about 2 or 3.  Understand that it takes about 1 hour/lift.  One or two tows may go in at a time, depending how long they are.

At 3pm, we were called into the lock.  :)  At 4pm, we were sitting tight inside the lock with the door stuck.  Hydraulic issue, we were told.  We had Locktails, then a lock supper on the grill.  How many can say they have done that?  At about 7:40pm, the door opened and we were out.  It was very dark, so we anchored a mile outside the lock.  It was actually a very calm night.

After Hoppies, we headed to the Ohio.  At the mouth of the Ohio there was a lot of barge traffic.  It looked like grand central station.  It was a long drive to our next quiet anchorage.  We got there at 6:45pm.  Had a cocktail and cooked brats rather quickly.  Wanted to get in before the mosquitos and no-see-ums came out.  Mike fished with a cicada as bate and got a bite before turning in.  In the morning, the cicada was still on his hook.
